Check this young pianist out! Go to 16:55 mins onwards. Her improvisation is so good that it kicks some of those pop pianists asses anytime.

Cheer Chen ?? - a piece of summer

Posted on September 29th, 2007 in music say say say

Alright I give up writing in chinese. I guess wordpress don’t really support chinese characters. That’s kinda sad. Cheer Chen..What can i say. Simply wonderful.

cheerconcert05.jpg

The moment she appeared on stage and started singing jiu fen de ka fei dian(??????), the hall was silenced, entranced in her angelic voice and great song. And this is the most charming thing about cheer, that there’s no need for fanciful staging, dancers, just a guitar and herself and she would be able to keep everyone’s focus on her.

Cheer’s always been very special to me. Now I know not many guys like her but not that I care. I first heard her songs many years ago and i didn’t know what that song was ( hai shi hui ji mo ????? ) but I felt happy, though it wasn’t exactly a happy song. I guess that’s because it’s a really nice song and really different, haven’t been able to stop since then. The one thing that’s most unique about her though, I must say is her voice. She has this pure, crystal clear voice that seems to penetrate the core of our soul. It’s not diva like or with any fanciful singing techniques but it’s what really attracts me. On the other hand, I really dislike singers with that diva like voice or with fanciful singing techniques. For me, it’s always about the feel. Like how i always prefer piano concertos to symphonic orchestras.

It’s a pity though, that Cheer didn’t sing some of my favourite songs like mei yi tian dou shi xin de lian xi (??????????) and ling gan (??) . I wonder why not many people like ??????????, too raw? Or just that not many people have actually heard of it. If anyone likes it. Tell me.

People should stop clapping for some of the songs, especially when they have a very bad sense of rhythm. That aside, the concert was great overall and things really got crazy when Cheer came down with her special car. Too bad she didn’t come to our side for long.

I’ve never heard of encores exceeding 3 times, maybe i haven’t been to enough concerts but 5 times is really something wouldn’t you agree. That happened for us. 5 times! wow. She seemed really happy too, and I was kinda touched seeing that. One thing funny was that i saw professor alex from nus there, he’s caucasian. I guess it’s for her wife, which was really nice.

At one point , Cheer told us that a piece of summer is not restricted to a literal level of meaning but to her , summer is special and her favourite season . And that every summer is a part of a special memory to her . I really look forward to her coming again, though i suspect it’s going to be a long long time. Well, to end off I hope everyone of you guys find a wonderful piece of memory in one of the summers in your life.

Poet of the Piano

Posted on September 25th, 2007 in Readings music processing

Notes were his words
Ivories were his tools
Music was his poetry

Chopin the poet of the piano
My greatest champion of classical music
His music never fails to entrance me

So What’s all this about? I just read the biography of Chopin and i’m quite moved by this truly artistic pianist of his time. All along i felt it in his music and after reading this i feel even more so. This realtime graphic is dedicated to him, inspired by his raindrop prelude. If you have a mic connected to your com, play a song and watch it react to the song. If you play the piano , play the raindrop prelude along with it :) . You need java though.

Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars

Posted on May 4th, 2007 in music say say say

Quiet nights and quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us

Quiet sounds and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet streams
and a window that looks out on the corcovado oh how lovely

Quiet nights and quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us

Quiet sounds and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet streams
and a window that looks out on the corcovado oh how lovely

This is where to be here with you so close to me
until the final flicker of life’s ember

I who was lost and lonely
believing life was only
A bitter tragic joke
have found with you
the meaning of existence oh my love

Class Jam

Posted on February 26th, 2007 in madness music

Last friday we had our first ever class jam. Ok it was not brilliant but it was great fun just playing some experimental stuff with various instruments and effects. Check out the blonde hair guy Kelvin, he’s my lecturer lol. Great musician and lecturer. Vladimir played too but my battery died when he did , too bad haha.
