Tokyo Fist - Movie

Posted on June 23rd, 2008 in Geeky Uncategorized movie

I’ve been watching much japanese B grade movies lately but before I say anything about it , I have to first define what I mean by B grade. It essentially only means low budget but not necessarily qualifies it as a lousy movie, it’s just non-mainstream. Anyway, those that i’ve watched are mostly violent ones. Why did I even get started on violent movies with blood splurting out like a fountain and limbs being cut off in every other scene. It started off purely as my interest in samurais and ninjas with movies like death trance . Then I discovered more and more of these indie movies and I must say some of them are really warped and psychotic. This one movie I watched today is Tokyo Fist.

The summary sounds ordinary and cliche enough but when you start watching it you immediately know it can’t be such a movie. Here goes,

A businessman, Tsuda, runs into a childhood friend, Tajuki, on the subway.

Tajuki is working as a semi-professional boxer. Tsuda soon begins to suspect that Tajuki might be having an affair with his fiance, Hizuru.

After an altercation, Tsuda begins training rigorously himself, leading to an extremely bloody, violent confrontation.

This is one movie that either says alot or nothing, depending on how you perceive it. I found it scary to watch as I follow the developmentof the characters( the plot wasn’t much). To me this movie is more about the characters than the plot. Everyone was going crazy and I felt at some point that it was getting to me as well , for most part I didn’t really understand why things were happening but then I thought its just not a movie to expect to know why. What the movie was saying to me was not about boxing or losing your girl, it was purely about losing your mind and the experience of it and also how fragile humans can be.

. I seriously don’t recommend this
to anyone who watches mainstream hollywood stuff all the time cause u wld prob scold me after watching it.

I spent my birthday watching the much anticipated new year films. That’s excluding the Jack Neo Ah long movie though cause I never watch Jack Neo’s movie , and this ah long one is simply too much of a copy from my wife is a gangster. Anyway , I was truly dissappointed by CJ7 , all that hype was for nothing. Stephen Chow said this movie is aimed at making people cry , fair enough cause I always thought that he had this element in his movies like journey to the west, which was at his best. But no, there was no sobby sob sob or even a good laugh throughout the whole movie. That has never ever happened to me in any of his movies. I guess he’s getting old and trying to take himself abit more seriously but he’s losing his trademark all together. I think this movie won’t do too well, despite the big amt of money that was spent. It’s kinda sad for me being someone who grew up watching his movies.

Kungfu Dunk on the other hand was a pleasant surprise. Why? Perhaps for the very fact that the director Zhu yan ping managed to improve his cheesy way of directing. His old films were always cheesy and kinda cheap looking but apparently he managed to pick himself up . More importantly was the charm of jay chow, stephen chow is charming also but jay chow’s charm is something else. It’s the kind of feeling that makes u want to see more of him, doing his stuff, how far he can go and do. Well he did quite well with his actions and kungfu though there wasn’t alot of acting as compared to the secret. The show was entertaining but some of the plot was a total ripoff from the slamdunk comic series, which didn’t matter at all , it was good, perfect for new year. The only thing that troubled me was some loose connections in between plots and the last part where the director tried to show everything, trying hard to please us. Still room for improvement on Zhu’s part.

So it’s 1 for jay chow and 0 for stephen Chow. I’m pretty sure stephen Chow’s next movie will be good though. I still have faith in him as the king of comedy :)

I chanced upon this penang restaurant this afternoon while wandering around and trying to decide where to have my lunch. So I was like wow I hope they have penang laksa and they really did! That must be one of the biggest discovery in boston ever and the thing is, the penang laksa here is better than most than i can get in singapore! Like real authentic stuff man. So it was a happy lunch for me though i perspired lots cause of it.

Harry potter came up next, movie screenings here are a lill late than those in singapore and it’s really interesting how their system works. Here people are forced to be there on time and early because if they don’t , they get no good seats. It’s free seatings can u believe it. lol. Good thing i was there earlier. I thought this harry potter was good as well, very much like how i imagined it to be when i was reading the book only that every1 was growing so fast lol. The story really goes darker n darker from here on, for the benefit of those who have not read the book, I shall not spoil it for u guys. Just be warned that its sad.  But nice.

I wonder if it happens to anyone else but i have this post-transformers effect that occurs whenever i see a truck or nice car. I would say things like ” Oh this car wld be an awesome robot” . It’s kinda duh but somehow i can’t help thinking about it. Who else gets this post transformers syndrome?

Transformers - More than meets the eye…

I finally watched transformers!! For those of u in singapore , u might think chey im slow. But it’s the opening night in boston, prob because of independence day . What i have to say is that nevermind the many questions that surrounds it or why some of the looks different, it’s just awesome anyway. I guess i’m saying this because it really made me feel that I was a young kid again. It’s really special to those who grew up watching transformers and there were many of such in the cinema with me today, all those grown up americans and we cheered the moment we saw optimus prime. This show is kinda hillarious also, like how our super macho robot heroes ended up having to hide in such awkard positions because of a few puny humans. haha. It’s just awesome.

Tak Sakaguchi

Recently I’ve had the luxury of surfing through the net for some movies and I came across this movie that totally blew me away. This film is “versus”, it’s a japanese indie movie that has achieved a cult status and believe me it is awesome! haha. Well the plot is about 1 mm thick but it’s all forgiven with its great action sequences. Basically this whole movie is non stop fighting action, gore and violence. I can’t believe this. Violent really. haha. But somehow I can’t bring myself to hate this show. It’s just way too cool and I thought it can’t get any cooler. Well I was wrong.

Next I got another film by Tak sakaguchi titled “Death Trance”. This is even cooler. Man this is like right out of the anime. I’ve never seen anything like this before. And I always have this thinking that japanese action movies are soso at best. It probably still is but certainly not this guy’s movies. He’s also an action choreographer . Seriously, forget Tony Jaa and jackie chan. Ok they are more solid but Sakaguchi’s moves are just way stylish, u just go waa watching it. Right , go catch it if u can.

300

I’ve always loved historical war movies and 300 is about one of the finest to date. True it’s not as accurate as it should be and many details have been changed to better suit the aesthetics of what they wanted but hey it’s based on frank millers book . However I hope you guys know that there was a king leonidas who led his 300 spartas out to war against the 250000 +- strong persian army.

The digital artworks were amazing..It’s hard to believe that everything is blue/green screen. woah..soon u don’t even need humans anymore. lol. It’s great , the fighting scenes. And attention was taken not to focus on just king leonidas but also his soldiers which in this respect, paid homage to the souls of the 300.

Go watch it if u haven’t.

Man with movie camera

Great Soviet movie by Dziga Vertov
He explores technology of the camera from different perspectives and makes some interesting statements about reality and the future.
